Julia Hertin ist Generalsekretärin des SRU. Sie arbeitet dort seit 2009 in verschiedenen Positionen, mit Ausnahme des Zeitraums 2012 bis 2013, als sie im Bundesumweltministerium im Themenbereich Energiewende beschäftigt war. Zuvor war sie etwa zehn Jahre lang in der universitären Forschung in Großbritannien (SPRU Science and Technology Policy Research an der University of Sussex) und Deutschland (Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik an der Freien Universität Berlin) tätig. Ihre Forschungsthemen waren Umweltpolitik, Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance, Technologie und Innovation, Zukunftsforschung und Klimaanpassung. Sie besitzt einen Doktortitel der Universität Wageningen (Niederlande), ein Diplom in Politikwissenschaften der Freien Universität Berlin sowie ein deutsch-französisches Diplom in Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften des Institut d'Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris und der Freien Universität Berlin.
